Talking Trends

| Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Trends come and go each season. Here’s a taste of what’s happening this spring.

Trends are pieces that you may not want to invest too much in but add to key wardrobe pieces you already own. Don’t feel you need to pick up every trend, just the ones that speak to you.

These are a few of our favourites....and we may have accidentally bought one or two pieces while putting this blog together #jobhazzard

Modern Pastels are one of this season’s biggest trends. This spring sees the return of sweet feminine pastel hues in streamlined fashion forward looks that take pastels far away from the stereotypical wedding attire. The way to rock this trend is to give it a little edge, think of texture and shape as seen below. Pair with a sheer crop top, try a trench coat dress or work a patent pastel piece in with your classics.

Florals are such a fun way to make a statement this spring. For those a little wary of the trend there are some pretty options that can be spruced up with a pop of color. For those wanting to seriously work it, there are some fabulous bold floral prints that can be mixed together to create a real wow factor or try the trend with a sweet print but an edgy shape if you’re looking for a little attention!

White is going head to toe creating a clean crisp vibe to brighten your look for the spring! There is something so stylish and chic about all white. Wide legged pants are being seen worked into this trend but this is one that you can put your own twist to just as many of the designers have.

Graphic monochromatic prints create a bold modern statement this spring. We are seeing all sorts of silhouettes popping up from feminine girly designs to strong sexy shapes. The great thing with this trend is that most of us have a black and white number tucked away in the closet and if not this is such and easy trend to incorporate into your regular attire.

Now go rummage through that closet and see what you can find!

Tis the season to go shopping

Stay tuned to our blog - weekly posts are coming your way

The fashion industry is cut throat

It's a dog eat dog world out there and only the passionate, driven, and talented individuals will make it
...which is the way it should be

(image not that of student)

Speaking of Passion, Drive and Talent today we showcase a student's work, who upon entering Artists Within had no training in makeup like most of our students, and is now successfully employed full time in the industry and is working hard to build a portfolio that is worthy of bragging rights

Angela has successfully completed the full time makeup diploma program, the session hair styling diploma program and the airbrush certificate program-with the goal of completing the advanced makeup diploma program in the near future.

We caught up with Angela to check out some of her latest work
....

Model-Ashley Q from AW Models International

Hair and makeup all done by Angela-this girl clearly knows what she's doing!

If you are an aspiring artist wanting to break in to the fashion industry through hair, makeup, wardrobe styling and more let Artists Within help you get there!

If you are a student or graduate from Artists Within, please send us images of your latest and greatest work, we'd love to brag about you too!!

Teach Me Tuesday-Kevin Murphy, the products and the man behind them

| Tuesday, July 17, 2012

We have all tried and tested different hair products that promise to give us everything we ever wanted and more in our hair

...unfortunately many products are all talk, do not deliver, and we end up resorting to a messy bun

Well search no more!
Kevin Murphy has solved all of your hair woes with his line of exceptional hair products that do EXACTLY what they say they are going to do with out building up, weighing down or leaving us little option but for a messy bun.
Let us introduce you to the man...

Kevin Murphy is one of the worlds most respected and sought after hairstylists.
With a long career spanning fashion, runway, editorial and film; everyone wants to work with him or be worked on by him!

Many iconic styles that we are seeing today on celebrities, in magazines, and TV are the result of Kevin Murphy's magic hands.

Let us show you some product must-haves for jealous worthy locks

Starting with the hair resort lotion...

Described as a 'texturiser for a messy beach look that defines long and fine hair'
Oil free, so not to weigh the hair down, this sexy surfer style defies gravity

Spoil yourself with conditioned, smooth, shiny hair; use Young.Again!

Young. Again adds shine and protects your hair from hot tools along with our harsh environment
A staple in all hair kits, closets and cabinets!

Shake and Sprinkle
...That's all it takes to use one of our absolute fave Kevin Murphy products

Powder.Puff

This little product has often tried to be imitated and duplicated but has never been successful.
Kevin Murphy's is by far the best product of it's kind on the market

Used as a powder volumiser, this product will give you volume and texture that just does not quit!
Offering a little grit to 'too clean hair', lifeless locks will jump into action with just a little sprinkle

And to finish all styles off, a little hairspray is needed...
Mr.Murphy has got that covered too

Session.Spray is a strong hold finishing spray that provides weightless, lasting hold to any style creation

These 4 products do not even begin to scratch the surface of cool products Kevin Murphy has to offer

Come in to Artists Within, we carry the whole Kevin Murphy line, and stock up on all your hair care needs and wants!

Fashion Friday-Denim Denim Denim

| Friday, June 8, 2012

These are all terms to describe different washes of denim and the process of achieving the individual effects.
Denim has always been a staple item. It's tough in nature and stylish by choice, denim is making a statement this season (and season's to come) with it's versatility and functionality.

Sticking with the format of 'Fashion Friday' at Artists Within, we bring to you makeup idea's, hair style inspirations and wardrobe must-haves!

A pop of color on the lids to match your indigo denim, nude lip, and bronzed cheeks makes for a beautiful look!

A brown smokey eye, especially on blue peepers, is the perfect balance of drama and innate.
Fuschia blush, bronze contour, clear glossed lips-that's all you need to imitate this beauty!

Another example of blue on brown. It's perfect everytime!
Minimal effort required to acheive this earth toned look.

Hair to pair (with your denim)

The 'top-knot', as it has been coined, can do no wrong in our books! It can be done in perfect form, or left a little disheveled-either way it's a versatile hairstyle for any occassion!

This beautiful diagonal braid is boho-chic!
Whether you are going out on the town with some of your besties or riding horseback through Stanley Park alongside one of the 'Housewives of Vancouver', this unique braiding technique will be sure to get you some attention.
Can you figure out how it is done...?

If top knots and mind bending braids are not for you, stick with loose waves that you can run your hands through.
Remember when curling the front sections, curl hair away from your face to create a nice sweep that prevent's being 'drowned or smothered' by your wavy locks.

And for the headliner- The Denim

Young and fresh with her acid wash, strapless denim dress and chunky heels; we're loving this look!
Generally a hater of 'sock'n'sandals', however this outfit may be the one that changes our minds.

The quilted denim one above is by: Rebecca Taylor

Design By Preen

Welcome to the Wild Wild West!
Denim waisted with pleated silk-organza- this maxi skirt is untraditonal and understated
Pair it with a shirt of similar fabric but different pattern to create an evening summer chic number

This denim trench, compliments of Derek Lam (that stylish devil), is the perfect jacket for Spring, Summer and warm Fall days!

Kind of like shrimp (Forrest Gump reference anyone??)-There are so many different ways to wear denim, prepare denim and cut denim...
A great way to experiment with denim is go second-hand. It's inexpensive to try and guilt free if you decide to get rid of your experimental piece.

Get creative and have fun!

Fashion Friday- Ombré Everything!

| Friday, March 30, 2012

It's an Ombré epidemic-get on board!

Ombré locks have been sported on all lengths and textures of hair by the fashion forward folks

Drew Barrymore, seen here hanging out in a skatepark for Instyle Mag, has a dramatic ombré on her shoulder length, messy 'do...
Look at her lips carefully and you'll notice a subtle ombré lip too!
Killin' it Drew!

For the short haired gal that wants to try the ombré, do it! It's a subtle effect that creates drama and depth.

The Ombré doesn't have to be just browns and blonde- try creating a temporary ombré effect with funky colors like pink and teal.
Kevin Murphy's color bugs should do the trick! And it washes out with one rinse, so you can try all the colors.

Ombré Makeup

If you missed Tuesday's blog, get back there and read it! We taught you how to achieve an ombré lip. Today we show you other variations of this hot trend!

The red lip ombré is stunning!
Your lips are the main attraction when eyes are kept soft and subtle.

This Ombré Lip found in Nylon Magazine uses both the top and bottom lip for the full ombré effect. Plums to fuschia to nude
paired with a soft pink blush and gold eyes keeps the pout a focal point

Adding gold shimmer to this orange lip creates a look that is nothing short of striking!
Monochromatic eyes and blush is just what this look needed!

Ombré on the Bod

This emerald green Foley + Corinna dress is a must-have!

Tights are an essential item for everyone- in a variety of colors, might as well have them all!
Support an Etsy shop by purchasing your Ombré tights at BZRshop

Ombré wedges in plum to black....*gasp*
So cool!

Happy Friday everyone-
Get your Ombré on!

Fashion Friday- Blushing Beauty

| Friday, March 23, 2012

Throw your bright colors aside this Spring and opt for subtle yet striking blush hues and nude tones

Blush in the Closet

Alexander Wang created this simply gorgeous dress!

This fun and flowy dress by Preen (Thornton Bregazzi) is great for a night on the town. Make it more casual by pairing it with a denim or leather jacket.

Marc Jacobs has done it again!
This dress is young, fun and easy to wear- perfect for a long summer night!

Blush on your face

Blush tones can be worn on all skin tones...

A light dusting over the lids and cheeks can achieve a 'beautiful blushing' effect.
Line the water line with a white pencil to brighten the eye

A matte peachy tone creates a nude base on olive skin tones

Blush with a copper undertone on dark skin creates a gorgeous undeniable glow!

Blush on your hair

For the non-commital fashionista wanting a *POP* of color in their hair, session stylist Kevin Murphy created the 'color bug'
The color bug is easy to use AND it rinses out with water!
Try creating an 'ombre effect' by using the bug on your ends and mid shaft of your hair.

The color bug can be used on all hair colors from your lightest of blondes to the darkest of chocolates

Rachel 'cute-as-a-button' McAdams opted for around the face color placement in pink. A funky addition to her vintage-esque dress

Placing the color on random strands, roots-to-ends, creates a hilight effect.
Try using multiple colors for some diversity!

Don't get too wild though-less is more especially if paired with beautiful blush or nude threads and makeup.

So blush this weekend or play it nude-Either way, you'll be turning heads!

Happy Friday!

Much Love From,

The 'blushing beauties' at Artists Within
